Chapter Twelve

Serenity

When Matthew walks into the dining room turned conference area, he brushes his fingers along the back of Adrian’s arm. The motion is subtle, but I zero in on it like a hawk. I lick my lips as I think about what I walked in on. Liam and Matthew had been an unexpected pair, but it seems to have opened Matthew up to the idea of more.

There are nearly a dozen of us gathered around the table, and Dylan dials Jenna’s number on the burner phone someone picked up at the gas station half an hour away from the house. My phone is still at the cabin, smashed in the bathroom garbage can. We don’t want to risk being tracked, so Jenna gave us an entire code for contacting her.

She answers on the first ring. “Serenity,” she says, a statement and not a question.

“Jenna,” I say. “You’re on speakerphone.”

She pauses. The silence seems to last hours, but it could only possibly be seconds. She refuses to speak to us for more than a few minutes at a time, so these little calls are precious. “Mesa, Arizona.”

My heart speeds up. All the attacks that we know of have been in Asia and Eastern Europe. This is much further west than anything we expected. I thought we’d be flying or taking portals, but Mesa is less than a day’s drive.

She rattles off some numbers, which Adrian dutifully writes down. Most of the information she’s given us has been encoded, and he seems to understand the system by now.

“And Serenity?” she asks. Before I can reply, she says, “Stay safe.”

I lean forward. “I will.” But the line is already dead.

The call was short and to the point, but when I look around the room, all eyes are on me. While the queen is trying to deal with the worldwide ramifications of the island being known, these people are looking to me to deal with the hunters. I deliberate for a moment. I don’t want to say the wrong thing. Although I’ve only been a part of the dragon world for a couple months, I’m in a position of power. I’m responsible for the safety of my people.

“My men and I will go to Arizona,” I finally decide. Gwen opens her mouth to speak, but I hold my hand up. “You will stay here. We need to be smart about this. I don’t want anyone getting hurt, and Dylan and I are the best shot at that. I need someone on the ground, and you can’t do that if you’re out trying to dismantle hunter groups.”

She closes her mouth and nods tightly. She’s not happy about my decision, but she trusts me enough to listen.

Adrian’s hand rests on my thigh under the table, and I reach down and wrap my fingers through his. Although my heart is racing and fear is building behind this confident facade, I will stay strong so long as these four are at my side.

“Everyone else, keep an eye out.
